Obsidian is a black volcanic stone. It forms when magma lava cools rapidly.

Rainbow obsidian’s uniqueness comes from the presence of fine gas inclusions and mineral nanoparticles trapped in the glassy mass. These microstructures diffract light and create concentric colorful iridescence, ranging from purple to green, with gold and blue in between. It’s this optical play that gives it its poetic name, “celestial eye.”

Obsidian in History

With its sharp edges, obsidian was a stone of choice for making blades, daggers, spearheads, and arrows during Prehistory.

The Egyptians used obsidian to create the eyes of their statues. The eyes of Tutankhamun’s funerary mask were made with black obsidian.

During embalming ceremonies, Egyptian priests used obsidian knives to ward off harmful energies.

The Aztecs made black obsidian mirrors to read the future.

Obsidian is traditionally considered a protective stone. It’s often seen as a symbolic shield against negative influences and is said to be linked to grounding in reality.
It’s also said to be connected to the unconscious, with some seeing it as a stone that supports inner exploration and the release of emotional blockages. In some traditions, it’s mentioned in connection with healing past trauma and protection against unwanted spiritual influences.

It’s sometimes placed near the bed or under the pillow, with the idea of helping you let go of stress and bringing an atmosphere of inner peace.

Obsidian varieties and associated energies

• Celestial eye obsidian (or rainbow): seen as a stone of intuition and clairvoyance. It’s traditionally found in living or working spaces, where it’s said to ward off negative energies. It’s also appreciated in certain spiritual practices aimed at strengthening perception and intuition.

• Apache tear obsidian: a dark, translucent variety surrounded by many Native American legends. It’s said to symbolize comfort in the face of grief and is often associated with emotional release.

• Golden obsidian: often used in divination practices, it’s associated with reading the future. Symbolically, it’s said to represent the fight against the ego and the balance of energies.

• Snowflake obsidian: traditionally linked to calm and balance. It’s said to be conducive to refocusing on yourself and meditation.

• Black obsidian: associated with introspection and self-discovery. Black obsidian spheres are sometimes used like crystal balls in meditative or divinatory practices.

• Silver obsidian: linked to bringing energetic blockages to light. It’s considered support for emotional work and meditation, and symbolically associated with patience and perseverance.

Cleansing and recharging

Cleansing:

Obsidian can be cleansed by running it under water. To preserve the bracelet’s elastic, we recommend smudging with a palo santo stick or white sage. Light the palo santo or sage and pass your jewelry above the smoke. Don’t forget to air out the room well after smudging.

Recharging:

Obsidian can be recharged in moonlight or by placing it in a quartz geode or an amethyst cluster. You can also use a flower of life charging plate.
