Obsidian is a black stone of volcanic origin. It forms during the rapid cooling of magmatic lava.

The uniqueness of rainbow obsidian comes from the presence of fine gas inclusions and mineral nanoparticles trapped within the vitreous mass. These micro-structures diffract light, creating concentric colored iridescence, ranging from purple to green, including gold and blue. This optical play gives it its poetic name, “celestial eye.”

Obsidian in History

With its sharp edges, obsidian was a stone of choice for making blades, daggers, spearheads, and arrows during Prehistory.

The Egyptians used obsidian to create the eyes of their statues. The eyes of Tutankhamun’s funerary mask were made with black obsidian.

During embalming ceremonies, Egyptian priests used obsidian knives to ward off harmful energies.

The Aztecs made black obsidian mirrors to read the future.

Obsidian is traditionally considered a protective stone. It is often perceived as a symbolic shield against negative influences and is associated with grounding in reality.
It is also attributed with a connection to the unconscious, with some seeing it as a stone that supports inner exploration and the release of emotional blockages. In some traditions, it is mentioned in connection with healing past traumas and protection against undesirable spiritual influences.

It is sometimes placed near the bed or under the pillow, with the idea of promoting stress relief and bringing an atmosphere of inner peace.

Obsidian Varieties and Associated Energies

• Celestial Eye Obsidian (or Rainbow): Perceived as a stone of intuition and clairvoyance. It is traditionally found in living or working spaces, where it is believed to ward off negative energies. It is also valued in certain spiritual practices aimed at strengthening perception and intuition.

• Apache Tear Obsidian: A dark and translucent variety, surrounded by numerous Native American legends. It symbolizes comfort in the face of grief and is often associated with emotional release.

• Golden Obsidian: Often used in divinatory practices, it is associated with reading the future. Symbolically, it represents the struggle against ego and the balance of energies.

• Snowflake Obsidian: Traditionally linked to calm and balance. It is said to be conducive to self-centering and meditation.

• Black Obsidian: Associated with introspection and self-discovery. Black obsidian spheres are sometimes used like crystal balls in meditative or divinatory practices.

• Silver Obsidian: Connected to highlighting energetic blockages. It is considered a support for emotional work and meditation, and symbolically associated with patience and perseverance.

Cleansing and recharging

Cleansing:

Obsidian can be purified by rinsing it under water. To preserve the bracelet’s elastic, we recommend fumigation with a palo santo stick or with white sage. Burn the palo santo or sage and pass your jewelry through the smoke produced. Remember to ventilate the room well after fumigation.

Recharging:

Obsidian can be recharged by moonlight or by placing it in a quartz geode or an amethyst druse. You can also use a flower of life plate.
