JUNGLE NEPHRITE, AN ATYPICAL MINERAL COMPOSITION

Jungle nephrite, also known as “jungle jade”, stands out for its atypical mineral composition. It’s a natural gemstone that brings together two materials that are rarely found together: nephrite and serpentine.
Its shades of green, crossed with lighter or darker areas, evoke dense vegetation—like a jungle.

A stone with two components

Nephrite jade is a very durable mineral from the amphibole family. It comes in shades ranging from deep green to lighter green.

Serpentine belongs to a group of hydrated minerals rich in magnesium. It is generally softer and shows gentler greens, sometimes slightly yellowish.

In jungle nephrite, these two components can:
• be diffusely distributed throughout the stone, giving a fairly uniform look
• or appear in distinct areas, in the form of veins, spots, or marbling

Each stone therefore has a unique appearance.

Geological formation

This rock forms in settings linked to ancient deep rocks, very rich in iron and magnesium, originating from the Earth’s mantle.

When these rocks rise toward the surface and come into contact with water, they gradually transform into serpentine and give rise to rocks called serpentinite: this is the process of serpentinization.

In some areas, under the effect of pressure, heat, and the circulation of fluids rich in calcium and magnesium, an additional transformation occurs that allows nephrite to form.

This results in a composite rock where serpentine and nephrite naturally coexist—an association that is relatively uncommon.

These transformations take place over millions of years.

These phenomena generally occur in zones where the Earth’s crust is being deformed, especially where tectonic plates interact.

Deposits

Most stones sold today under the name jungle nephrite come from Pakistan, especially from the mountainous regions in the north.

Like other jades, jungle nephrite is associated with:

Its appearance, reminiscent of lush vegetation, naturally strengthens its link with:
