💙 Sapphire – A stone of wisdom and protection

Sapphire mining dates back to Antiquity, probably as early as the 7th century BC, in India and Sri Lanka, where the first blue gems were already considered sacred. The word sapphire comes from the Greek sappheiros, which originally referred to lapis lazuli, before coming to mean the blue variety of corundum.

Sapphire is, like ruby, a variety of corundum, a mineral of extreme hardness. On the Mohs scale, it ranks at 9, just below diamond. It forms under high pressure and temperature, generally in metamorphic rocks (gneiss, schists) or igneous rocks (basalt, pegmatite).

The most famous deposits are found in Sri Lanka, Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Kashmir, Madagascar, Australia, and Cambodia. Some highly sought-after sapphires, like Kashmir sapphires, have become almost impossible to find.

The presence of titanium and iron in corundum’s structure gives sapphire its typical blue color. There are also pink, yellow, green, or colorless sapphires: these are called fancy sapphires.

✨ History, beliefs, and ancient uses

In Antiquity, sapphire was considered a divine stone. Among the Persians, it was believed that the Earth rested on a giant sapphire, and that the sky drew its blue color from this stone.

In the Middle Ages, sapphire was seen as a heavenly stone, a symbol of justice, faithfulness, and purity. It was worn by kings and clergy to protect themselves from temptation and poisons. Some accounts claim it had the power to soothe God’s anger and guard against betrayal.

In medieval medicine, sapphire was ground and mixed into elixirs against fevers, bleeding, or to soothe eye ailments. It also symbolized divine wisdom and was used to support prayer or study.

Saint Hildegard of Bingen recommended sapphire for eye infections and to strengthen the nerves.

Sapphire is a stone of mental and spiritual protection, often associated with wisdom, inner peace, and concentration.

It’s known for:

• Soothing the mind and calming obsessive thoughts
• Promoting mental clarity, intuition, and decision-making
• Encouraging faithfulness, loyalty, and truth
• Protecting against negative outside influences
• Supporting meditation and spiritual growth

Blue sapphire is also a stone of re-centering, especially helpful for sensitive people or those who are mentally overworked.

It’s often recommended for students, researchers, or therapists. However, in cases of excessive emotionality or severe emotional fatigue, a very vibrant sapphire could feel too intense.

Purification and recharging

🔸 Purification

Sapphire can be purified with demineralized water, but to preserve your jewelry setting, we recommend a gentle smoke cleanse with a stick of palo santo or white sage. Pass your jewelry through the smoke, then air out the room well.

🔸 Recharging

Sapphire can be recharged in moonlight, especially during the full moon, or placed in a quartz geode or on a selenite plate for a gentle recharge.
