Topaz is an aluminum silicate. It is found in igneous rock formations and in silica-rich metamorphic formations. It may contain traces of chromium, iron, magnesium, or titanium.

In Europe, notable deposits exist in Scotland (Cairn Gorm) and Ireland (Mourne Mountains).

Symbolism and Ancient Use

In ancient times, Egyptians believed that golden topaz was created by Ra, the Sun God, and attributed powers of protection and regeneration to it. Greeks and Romans held similar beliefs: they used topaz as an amulet, believing it conferred strength and courage, while also combating insomnia. Romans also believed that topaz had the ability to change color in the presence of poison, thus signaling imminent danger.

In the Middle Ages, topaz was revered as a protective stone. It was believed to ward off evil spells and curses, and to bring physical and spiritual healing. Hildegard of Bingen, an emblematic figure of the era, used topaz in elixir form to treat vision problems.

Purification and recharging

Cleansing:

Topaz can be purified by quickly rinsing it under water. To preserve the jewelry setting, it is recommended to purify it by fumigation with a palo santo stick or with white sage. Burn the palo santo or sage and pass your jewelry over the smoke produced. Remember to ventilate the room well after fumigation.

Recharging:

Topaz can be recharged in sunlight, in a quartz geode, on a quartz cluster, or an amethyst druse.
