“Swedish Blue” comes from the ruins of medieval foundries in the Bergslagen region of Sweden. The bluish color variations of the stone are determined by the residual minerals present in the original rocks. The name “Swedish Blue” refers to the stone’s characteristic blue hue, symbolizing Swedish heritage.

The stone is a residual product from Swedish iron production dating back over three hundred years. Production took place in small coal-fired furnaces, where the ore was melted into a liquid mass.

The stone forms when the furnace reaches a temperature high enough to vitrify the ore. The rock is the slag that forms during the melting of metals. The slag floats to the top of the melt and is removed from the blast furnace before the metal. Slag comes in every possible color and texture. What distinguishes Bergslaggsten is precisely the blue color and texture.

The color can vary from light blue to pure blue, dark blue, through green to black. The appearance depends, among other things, on the minerals it contains. The blue-green shades come from copper elements present in the material, which is mainly composed of silica. The structure is glass-like and, once polished, it gives a shine.

In terms of composition, it is very similar to volcanic glass.

Swedish Blue is not officially recognized as a distinct mineral species in standard mineralogical classifications. It consists mainly of foundry residues, composed of various minerals and impurities, which complicates precise classification.

Due to its composite nature, the physical properties of Swedish Blue can vary. However, in general, it exhibits moderate hardness and variable density, reflecting its heterogeneous mineral composition.

To create jewelry, each stone is hand-cut. Its structure requires the human eye and manual skills to bring out the fine patterns in the stones.

Swedish Blue is considered a rare material, prized by collectors. Today, it is used in the manufacture of decorative objects, reflecting Sweden’s cultural and artisanal heritage.

Swedish Blue can be purified by quickly running it under water. To preserve the jewelry setting, it is recommended to purify it by smudging with a palo santo stick or with white sage. Burn the palo santo or sage and pass your jewelry over the smoke. Don’t forget to ventilate the room well after smudging.

Recharging:

Swedish Blue can be recharged in sunlight, however avoid prolonged exposure to the sun to preserve its color. It can also be recharged in moonlight or in a rock crystal geode or an amethyst geode.
