Onyx is a variety of agate. It has been widely used in decorative object carving and in the creation of artworks. One of the most remarkable is the Great Cameo of France, or the Sainte-Chapelle Cameo. It is the largest cameo known in the world, 31 cm high and 26.5 cm wide. It dates from the 1^st century AD. It is said to depict the apotheosis of Augustus and the continuation of his dynasty. It is made up of 24 figures representing his entire lineage up to the Roman emperor Tiberius.

In ancient Chinese civilizations, onyx was considered unlucky. It was therefore not used and was intended solely for export.

In the Middle Ages, wearing onyx was discouraged. Its dreamlike powers were feared. It was said that wearing onyx made you see ghosts in your sleep.

Onyx came back into fashion during the Renaissance.

Cleansing and recharging

Cleansing:

Onyx can be purified by running it under water for a few minutes. To preserve the jewelry setting, we recommend fumigation instead with a stick of palo santo or with white sage. Burn the palo santo or sage and pass your jewelry over the smoke released. Don’t forget to air out the room well after fumigation.

Recharging:

Onyx can be recharged in the sun, in moonlight, or by placing it in a quartz geode, on a quartz cluster or an amethyst druse. You can also use a Flower of Life charging plate
