The obsidian is a black stone of volcanic origin. It forms during the rapid cooling of magmatic lava.

The uniqueness of rainbow obsidian comes from the presence of fine gas inclusions and mineral nanoparticles trapped in the glassy mass. These micro-structures diffract light and create concentric colored iridescence, ranging from purple to green, including gold and blue. This optical play is what gives it its poetic name of “heavenly eye.”

Obsidian in History

With its sharp edges, obsidian was a stone of choice for making blades, daggers, spearheads, and arrows during Prehistory.

The Egyptians used obsidian to create the eyes of their statues. The eyes of Tutankhamun’s funerary mask were made with black obsidian.

During embalming ceremonies, Egyptian priests used obsidian knives to ward off harmful energies.

The Aztecs made black obsidian mirrors to read the future.

Obsidian is traditionally considered a stone of protection. It is often perceived as a symbolic shield against negative influences and is said to be associated with grounding in reality.
It is also attributed a link with the subconscious, with some seeing it as a stone that accompanies inner exploration and the elimination of emotional blockages. In some traditions, it is mentioned in connection with healing past traumas and protection against unwanted spiritual influences.

It is sometimes placed near the bed or under the pillow, with the idea of promoting stress relief and bringing an atmosphere of inner peace.

Obsidian varieties and associated energies

• Heavenly eye (or rainbow) obsidian: perceived as a stone of intuition and clairvoyance. It is traditionally found in living or working spaces, where it is supposed to ward off negative energies. It is also appreciated in certain spiritual practices aimed at strengthening perception and intuition.

• Apache tear obsidian: a dark and translucent variety, it is surrounded by many Native American legends. It symbolizes comfort in the face of grief and is often associated with emotional release.

• Golden obsidian: often used in divinatory practices, it is associated with reading the future. Symbolically, it represents the struggle against the ego and the balance of energies.

• Snowflake obsidian: traditionally linked to calm and balance. It is said to be conducive to self-centering and meditation.

• Black obsidian: associated with introspection and self-discovery. Black obsidian spheres are sometimes used like crystal balls in meditative or divinatory practices.

Cleansing and recharging

Cleansing:

Obsidian can be purified by rinsing it under water. To preserve the bracelet’s elastic, we recommend fumigation with a palo santo stick or white sage. Burn the palo santo or sage and pass your jewelry over the smoke. Don’t forget to ventilate the room well after fumigating.

Recharging:

Obsidian can be recharged in moonlight or by placing it in a quartz geode or an amethyst druse. You can also use a flower of life tray.
