Obsidian is a black stone of volcanic origin. It forms during the rapid cooling of magmatic lava. It shines with a lustrous black or can be speckled with white spots (snowflake obsidian).

With its sharp edges, obsidian was a stone of choice for making blades, daggers, spearheads, and arrows during Prehistory.

The Egyptians used obsidian to create the eyes of their statues. The eyes of Tutankhamun’s funerary mask were made of black obsidian. The Aztecs fashioned obsidian mirrors for ritual and divinatory practices.

In esoteric traditions, obsidian is considered a protective stone. It symbolizes a shield against negative influences and evokes grounding as well as lucidity. It is also linked to introspection and self-work. Some beliefs attribute it a role in releasing emotional blockages.

It is sometimes placed near the bed or in a living space as a symbolic gesture for soothing.

Mahogany obsidian is distinguished by its red and deep brown shades, due to the presence of iron oxides during its volcanic formation. It evokes a more stable grounding and a gentler energy, while retaining the protective dimension traditionally attributed to obsidian.

Golden obsidian is traditionally linked to clairvoyance and self-perception. It is often mentioned in personal reflection practices.

Black obsidian relates to inner exploration. Obsidian spheres are used in certain meditative or symbolic traditions.

Silver obsidian symbolically highlights unconscious parts and perseverance on the personal journey.

Sheen obsidian, or rainbow obsidian, is linked to intuition and protection in many traditions. It is frequently placed in a living area with symbolic intent.

Snowflake obsidian is associated with balance and inner calm. It symbolizes recentering and impartiality.

Cleansing and recharging

Cleansing:

Obsidian can be purified by rinsing it under water. It can also be purified by smudging with a palo santo stick or with white sage. Burn the palo santo or sage and pass the stone over the smoke. Don’t forget to ventilate the room well after smudging.

Recharging:

Obsidian can be recharged by moonlight or by placing it in a quartz geode, on a quartz cluster . You can also use a Flower of Life tray.
