Topaz is an aluminum silicate. It is found in igneous rock formations and silica-rich metamorphic formations. It may contain traces of chromium, iron, magnesium, or titanium.

A multitude of colors

Topaz comes in a spectacular range of colors from light blue to pink, yellow to green, and sometimes even colorless. While light blue, yellow, and colorless topaz are natural, some dark blue and pink topaz have undergone heat treatment or irradiation. Thanks to its hardness, topaz is highly prized in jewelry.

Topaz is a pleochroic stone, which means it can show different color tones when viewed from different angles. This phenomenon is especially appreciated for its ability to give the stone a new dimension depending on the light.

Geological origins

Historically, topaz mining began in the 18th century, mainly in Germany, at the Schneckenstein mine. However, this mine has exhausted its resources. Today, Brazil is the world’s leading producer of topaz, especially in the state of Minas Gerais, where deposits are abundant. In Europe, notable deposits exist in Scotland (Cairngorm Mountain) and in Ireland (the Mourne Mountains).

Symbolism and ancient use

Throughout the ages, topaz has been seen not only as a gemstone, but also as a talisman with mystical powers. In Antiquity, the Egyptians believed that golden topaz was created by Ra, the Sun God, and attributed to it powers of protection and regeneration. Topaz was also part of biblical treasures, mentioned as one of the stones in Aaron’s breastplate.

The Greeks and Romans held similar beliefs: they used topaz as an amulet, believing it granted strength and courage while fighting insomnia. The Romans also believed that topaz could change color in the presence of poison, thus signaling imminent danger.

In the Middle Ages, topaz was revered as a protective stone. It was believed to ward off evil spells and curses, and to bring physical and spiritual healing. Hildegard of Bingen, an iconic figure of the time, used topaz in elixir form to treat vision disorders.

Purification and recharging

Cleansing:

Topaz can be cleansed by quickly running it under water. To preserve the jewelry setting, it’s best to cleanse it by fumigation with a palo santo stick or with white sage. Burn the palo santo or sage and pass your jewelry over the smoke released. Don’t forget to air out the room well after fumigation.

Recharging:

Topaz can be recharged in sunlight, in a quartz geode, on a quartz cluster or an amethyst druse.
