Amethyst belongs to the quartz family and owes its unique color to the presence of iron and natural irradiation experienced deep within the Earth’s crust. Its palette ranges from pale violet to intense purple, depending on the concentration of minerals and geological formation conditions.

This stone primarily crystallizes in geodes or rock veins, sometimes over several million years, before being carefully extracted.

Used for both its spiritual properties and its beauty, Amethyst has marked the history of many civilizations:

✨ Ancient Egypt

The Egyptians used amethyst to carve amulets and royal seals. They attributed virtues of protection against evil to it and used it in funerary rites.

✨ Ancient Greece and Rome

Its name comes from the Greek “amethystos”, meaning “not drunk”. The Greeks believed the stone protected against intoxication and excess, and sometimes drank wine from amethyst-carved cups. It was also associated with Dionysus, the god of wine and ecstasy.

✨ Middle Ages

Amethyst then became a spiritual and religious stone. It’s used in the episcopal rings of Christian bishops, as a symbol of wisdom, temperance, and purity.

✨ In Asia

In China and India, amethyst is used to calm the mind, promote meditation, and balance the energy of the third eye.

🌌 Legends and beliefs surrounding amethyst

The most famous legend comes from Greek mythology:
Dionysus, vexed by a human insult, decided to take revenge by unleashing tigers on the first person he encountered. This person was Amethystos, a pious young girl, protected by the goddess Artemis who transformed her into a quartz statue to save her. Filled with remorse, Dionysus poured wine over the statue, giving it its purple color.

This story founded the belief that amethyst protects against intoxication, but also against uncontrolled passions, negative thoughts, and illusions.

In lithotherapy, amethyst is said to dissipate anxiety and anger, help regulate stress, and control emotions.

Amethyst is considered an excellent stone to help combat insomnia. You usually place a tumbled stone under your pillow or near your bed.

On a spiritual level, amethyst is the stone of wisdom and humility. It promotes concentration, meditation, and spiritual elevation. It stimulates the creative process, imagination, and clarity of mind.

Purification and recharging:

Cleansing:

Amethyst can be purified by soaking it in water for a few minutes.

It can also be purified by fumigation with a palo santo stick or white sage. Burn the palo santo or sage and pass your stone through the smoke produced. Don’t forget to ventilate the room well after fumigating.

Recharging:

Amethyst can be recharged by placing it in moonlight for a few hours. It can also be placed in a quartz geode or on a quartz cluster (druse). Warning! It’s not recommended to expose amethyst to the sun for long periods. Amethyst is sensitive to strong light and intense heat, which can alter the stone’s color.
