Purpurite is a stone little known to the general public, but highly prized by collectors and mineral lovers for its intense, velvety violet color. Its name comes from the Latin purpura, referring to the natural purple hue that characterizes it.

➤ Origin and formation

Purpurite is a secondary mineral resulting from the natural alteration of triphylite, a lithium, iron, and manganese phosphate. This oxidation process gives it a shade ranging from deep violet to reddish purple, sometimes mixed with black or brown reflections depending on the inclusions.

This rare mineral is generally found in granitic or pegmatitic deposits, in geological zones rich in phosphates.

• France (rarer presence, often in raw state)

It is a fragile and porous stone, often left raw or lightly polished, as it does not handle high-gloss polishing or chemical treatments well.

Purpurite is a porous and sensitive stone; soaking it in water is not recommended.
Opt for gentle smudging with a palo santo or white sage stick. Burn the palo santo or sage. Pass the stone through the smoke for a few moments. Ventilate the room well after smudging.
