In ancient times, Greeks and Romans believed that amethyst helped resist intoxication. Wine goblets were frequently adorned with amethyst.

In Greek mythology, the god of wine, Dionysus, ardently pursued a young woman named Amethystos. She rejected his advances and sought help from the goddess Artemis. To protect her, Artemis transformed her into a white stone. Disappointed and offended, Dionysus poured wine over the stone, which then turned purple.

In the Middle Ages, amethyst acquired a strong spiritual dimension. It became a symbol of faith and devotion. Bishops and cardinals often wore rings or signets set with amethysts. The stone’s purple color represented the ultimate sacrifice of Christ.

Amethyst can be purified by placing it under running water for a few moments. To preserve the jewelry setting, we recommend fumigation with a palo santo stick or white sage. Burn the palo santo or sage and pass your jewelry through the smoke. Don’t forget to ventilate the room well after fumigating.

Recharging:

Amethyst can be recharged by placing it in moonlight for a few hours. It can also be placed in a quartz geode or on a quartz cluster (druzy). Warning! It is not recommended to expose amethyst to prolonged sunlight. Amethyst is sensitive to strong light and intense heat, which can alter the stone’s color.
