Hematite is one of the most common minerals. Most of its production comes from Brazil. Although it is black to silvery-gray in color, hematite is part of the red stone family. Hematite is an iron oxide. It is also called “bloodstone” because it colors the cooling water red when cut.

During prehistoric times, it was already in use. Cave paintings were made using ground hematite.

Due to its high iron content, hematite was long used by doctors to treat certain blood diseases. However, scientists and doctors have not been able to confirm that hematite can heal.

In Ayurvedic medicine, hematite is traditionally used in cases of anemia and menorrhagia.

Albertus Magnus, a renowned 13th-century professor, wrote that hematite had strong astringent properties and could treat anemia and certain eye diseases.

Hematite is a stone of grounding, of connection to reality. It encourages being in tune with yourself and listening to others. It helps build self-confidence and overcome problems. It is the ultimate stone for shy people.

In crystal healing, hematite is considered an energizing and anti-stress stone. Hematite is associated with professions that require great listening skills: social work, medical field, lawyers.

Hematite is associated with the Root Chakra. On a spiritual level, hematite is a very Yang stone. It rebalances energy when dominated by too much Yin energy. It dispels negative energies to restore peace and harmony to the body.

Cleansing:

Hematite can be purified by soaking it in salt water for a few minutes. However, to preserve the elastic of bracelets/jewelry setting, we recommend fumigation with a palo santo stick or white sage instead. Burn the palo santo or sage and pass your jewelry through the smoke released. Don’t forget to ventilate the room well after fumigation.

Recharging:

Hematite can be recharged by placing it in sunlight.

It can also be placed in a quartz geode, on a quartz cluster or an amethyst druse.
