🌳 Fossilized Wood – How does it form?

Fossilized wood (or “petrified wood”) is the result of a very long geological process that gradually transforms a tree into stone. Its creation spans millions of years and relies on a set of rare and precise natural conditions.

🪵 1. Rapid burial of the wood

Formation begins when a tree falls and is then quickly covered by sediments, volcanic ash, or mud.
This rapid covering is essential: it prevents the wood from fully decomposing upon contact with air, fungi, and bacteria.

💧 2. Infiltration of mineral-rich water

Once buried, the wood is permeated by groundwater rich in minerals, especially silica (SiO₂), but sometimes also:

• chalcedony

• opal

• microcrystalline quartz

• carbonates or oxides (which can color the stone)

This water slowly circulates through the wood’s tissues.

🔄 3. Gradual cell replacement

The key process is called petrification or silicification:

• organic wood cells decompose,

• while minerals take their place,

• preserving the original structure.

Unlike simple mineralization, fossilized wood retains the wood’s anatomy: growth rings, veins, pores, internal patterns, perfectly reproduced in stone.

This happens molecule by molecule, slowly, until the tree is entirely transformed.

🪨 4. Complete formation: wood turned to stone

After several million years, the wood has become:

• hard as quartz (hardness 7)

• stable,

• fully mineralized

• with colors ranging from beige to red, brown, pink, gray, or yellow depending on the minerals present (iron, manganese, copper, etc.)

The result: a piece that still looks like wood but is actually a silica rock.

🌍 5. Ideal formation conditions

Fossilized wood primarily appears:

• in volcanic areas, where silica from ash facilitates petrification,

• in environments where groundwater is mineralized,

• where burial was rapid and deep.

Madagascar, Arizona, Australia, and Indonesia are among the most famous regions offering these conditions.

Fossilized wood combines:

• the organic history of a tree,

• the geological transformation of a rock,

• precise preservation of microscopic details,

• unique mineral colors.

It is both a fossil, an ornamental stone, and a testament to the passage of time.
