🌍 Origin, Formation & History of Ulexite

Ulexite is a borate mineral that forms in evaporite basins, areas where intense evaporation concentrates minerals present in water. When these salt lakes dry up, boron-rich elements precipitate and give rise to various borates, including ulexite.

Identified in the 19th century and named after chemist Georg Ludwig Ulex, ulexite quickly became famous for its natural optical phenomenon: its fibrous structure acts as a light guide, transmitting an image from one face to the other.
This phenomenon earned it the nickname “TV Rock”, unique among natural minerals.

The salt deserts of California and Chile are among the most renowned regions for their ulexite deposits.

Ulexite is easily recognized by:

• its fibrous structure
• its silky white appearance, sometimes satiny
• its remarkable optical effect, created by the natural alignment of its fibers

Its low hardness and sensitivity to water explain why ulexite is rarely used in jewelry and is more appreciated as a collector’s stone or for crystal healing.
