Libyan desert glass is a natural impact glass, of remarkable purity (nearly 98% silica).
It formed approximately 29 million years ago, following the impact of a meteorite or its explosion in the atmosphere, which melted the silica-rich sands of the Great Sand Sea, on the border between Egypt and Libya.
The vitrified sand then cooled, giving birth to a translucent golden glass, sometimes tinged with green or amber, now known as Libyan Desert Glass.

This unique material was discovered in the early 20th century by European explorers traveling through the Great Sand Sea region. However, fragments had been known since antiquity: the Egyptians used it to make jewelry and ornaments, including a pendant from Tutankhamun’s pectoral, symbol of solar light and divine protection.
