Obsidian is a black volcanic stone. It forms when magma lava cools rapidly. Apache Tear obsidian is a dark variety, usually brown-black and translucent when held up to the light. Its distinctive feature is that it crystallized into small rounded concretions, often drop-shaped, which earned it the poetic name “tear.” This unique structure sets it apart from other, more solid varieties of obsidian.

Obsidian in History

With its sharp edges, obsidian was a stone of choice for making blades, daggers, spearheads, and arrows during Prehistory.

The Egyptians used obsidian to create the eyes of their statues. The eyes of Tutankhamun’s funerary mask were made with black obsidian.

During embalming ceremonies, Egyptian priests used obsidian knives to ward off harmful energies.

The Aztecs made black obsidian mirrors to read the future.

Obsidian is traditionally considered a protective stone. It’s often seen as a symbolic shield against negative influences and is said to be associated with grounding in reality.
It’s also said to be linked to the unconscious, with some seeing it as a stone that supports inner exploration and the release of emotional blockages. In some traditions, it’s mentioned in connection with healing past trauma and protection against unwanted spiritual influences.

It’s sometimes placed near the bed or under the pillow, with the idea of helping release stress and bringing an atmosphere of inner peace.

According to a Native American legend, “Apache Tear” obsidian was born from the tears shed by the women of an Apache people after losing their warriors in battle. These tears, falling to the ground, are said to have turned into stone. Since then, it’s been seen as a symbol of comfort and emotional release, believed to help you through periods of mourning or sorrow.

Cleansing and recharging

Cleansing:

Obsidian can be cleansed by running it under water. To preserve the bracelet’s elastic, we recommend smudging instead with a palo santo stick or white sage. Light the palo santo or sage and pass your jewelry above the smoke. Don’t forget to air out the room well after smudging.

Recharging:

Obsidian can be recharged in moonlight or by placing it in a quartz geode or an amethyst cluster. You can also use a Flower of Life charging plate.
