Origin and formation

Celestine, also called Celestite, is a mineral from the sulfate group, composed mainly of strontium sulfate (SrSO₄). It generally forms in the cavities of sedimentary rocks rich in gypsum, dolomite, or calcite.
Its sky-blue color, sometimes slightly silvery, is due to the presence of trace impurities and internal light diffraction phenomena.

The most beautiful specimens come from Madagascar, where Celestine often occurs as crystal geodes with a delicate blue hue, highly prized by collectors and mineral enthusiasts.

History and symbolism

The name “Celestine” comes from the Latin caelestis, meaning “celestial,” referring to its light blue color evocative of the sky and purity.
Discovered in the 18th century, it was once used as a decorative mineral and as a natural source of strontium, an element used in the manufacture of special glass and red fireworks.

Purification and recharging:

Purification

As Celestine is a fragile stone, it is best to avoid water.
To purify it, fumigation with a palo santo stick or white sage is recommended.
Gently pass the stone over the smoke for a few moments, then air out the room well.
You can also place it for a few hours on a selenite plate.

Recharging

Celestine can be recharged in soft moonlight, particularly during the full moon, or by placing it for a few hours on a selenite plate.
It is not recommended to expose it to direct sunlight, as its color could fade.
