Ruby mining dates back to the 8th century BC. Rubies were mined from the mines of Sri Lanka.

Ruby is extremely hard. On the Mohs scale, only diamond has a higher hardness. 90% of world production is found in Burma. It forms in the Earth’s crust under intense heat and pressure. It is mainly found in metamorphic rocks such as marble, gneiss, or schist, or in certain igneous rocks such as basalt. In addition to high temperature and pressure, the presence of specific chemical elements is also necessary for ruby formation. Trace amounts of chromium give ruby its red color.

In the Middle Ages, ruby was used for medicinal purposes. It was ground into powder and added to hot drinks to stop hemorrhages and regulate heart disorders. At that time, it was also used to bring good luck. In popular belief, it was considered to have prophetic powers. If the ruby darkened, it announced an imminent disaster or misfortune.

Saint Hildegard of Bingen recommended ruby for viral diseases, fever, and the healing of arthritis.

In lithotherapy, ruby is associated with stimulating energy and vitality. It is considered an ally in fighting fatigue. Like garnet, it is not recommended for quick-tempered people. It increases motivation and encourages the pursuit of realistic goals. It encourages passion and develops enthusiasm.

Purification and recharging

Cleansing:

Ruby can be purified by soaking it in demineralized water. To preserve the jewelry setting, we recommend instead smudging with a palo santo stick or with white sage. Burn the palo santo or sage and pass your jewelry over the smoke. Don’t forget to ventilate the room well after smudging.

Recharging:

Ruby can be recharged by placing it in sunlight for a few hours. It can also be placed in a quartz geode, on a quartz cluster or a selenite plate.
