Obsidian is a black stone of volcanic origin. It forms when magma lava cools rapidly. It shines with a glossy black or can be speckled with white spots (snowflake obsidian).

With its sharp edges, obsidian was a stone of choice for making blades, daggers, spearheads, and arrows during Prehistory.

The Egyptians used obsidian to create the eyes of their statues. The eyes of Tutankhamun’s funerary mask were made of black obsidian. The Aztecs, for their part, shaped obsidian mirrors as part of ritual and divinatory practices.

In esoteric traditions, obsidian is considered a protective stone. It symbolizes a shield against negative influences and evokes grounding as well as clarity. It is also linked to introspection and inner work. Some beliefs attribute to it a role in releasing emotional blockages.

It is sometimes placed near the bed or in a living space as a symbolic approach to soothing.

Mahogany obsidian stands out for its deep red and brown tones, due to the presence of iron oxides during its volcanic formation. It suggests more stable grounding and a gentler energy, while retaining the protective dimension traditionally attributed to obsidian.

Golden obsidian is traditionally associated with clairvoyance and self-perception. It is often mentioned in personal reflection practices.

Black obsidian relates to inner exploration. Obsidian spheres are used in some meditative or symbolic traditions.

Silver obsidian symbolically highlights unconscious aspects and perseverance on the personal journey.

Celestial eye obsidian, or rainbow obsidian, is linked to intuition and protection in many traditions. It is often placed in a living space with a symbolic intention.

Snowflake obsidian is associated with balance and inner calm. It symbolizes refocusing and impartiality.

Cleansing and recharging

Cleansing:

Obsidian can be purified by rinsing it under water. It can also be purified by smudging with a palo santo stick or with white sage. Burn the palo santo or sage and pass the stone over the smoke. Don’t forget to ventilate the room well after smudging.

Recharging:

Obsidian can be recharged in moonlight or by placing it in a quartz geode, on a quartz cluster . You can also use a flower of life plate.
