In ancient times, the Greeks and Romans believed that amethyst helped resist intoxication. In Greek mythology, the God of wine, Dionysus, ardently courted a young girl named Amethystos. She rejected his advances and sought help from the goddess Artemis. To protect her, Artemis transformed her into a white stone. Dionysus, disappointed and offended, poured wine over the stone, which then turned purple.

In the Middle Ages, amethyst acquired a strong spiritual dimension. It became a symbol of faith and devotion. Bishops and cardinals often wore rings or signet rings adorned with amethysts. The stone’s purple color represented the ultimate sacrifice of Christ.

Cleansing:

Amethyst can be purified by soaking it in water for a few minutes.

However, to preserve the ring’s silver setting, it is preferable to purify it by fumigation with a palo santo stick or white sage. Burn the palo santo or sage and pass your jewelry through the smoke. Remember to ventilate the room well after fumigation.

Recharging:

Amethyst can be recharged by placing it in moonlight for a few hours. It can also be placed in a quartz geode or on a quartz cluster (druzy). Warning! It is not recommended to expose amethyst to prolonged sunlight. Amethyst is sensitive to strong light and intense heat, which can alter the stone’s color.
