Topaz is an aluminum silicate. It’s found in igneous rock formations and silica-rich metamorphic formations. It may contain traces of chromium, iron, magnesium or titanium.

A Multitude of Colors

Topaz comes in a spectacular range of colors from light blue to pink, yellow to green, and sometimes even colorless. While light blue, yellow and colorless topazes are natural, some dark blue and pink topazes have undergone heat treatments or irradiation. Due to its hardness, topaz is highly prized in jewelry.

Topaz is a pleochroic stone, which means it can display different shades of color when viewed from different angles. This phenomenon is particularly appreciated for its ability to offer a new dimension to the stone depending on the light.

Geological Origins

Historically, topaz mining began in the 18th century, mainly in Germany, at the Schneckenstein mine. However, this mine has exhausted its resources. Today, Brazil is the world’s leading topaz producer, particularly in the state of Minas Gerais, where deposits are abundant. In Europe, notable deposits exist in Scotland (Mount Cair Gorn) and Ireland (Mourne Mountains).

Symbolism and Ancient Use

Throughout the ages, topaz has been seen not only as a precious stone, but also as a talisman endowed with mystical powers. In ancient times, the Egyptians believed that golden topaz had been created by Ra, the Sun God, and attributed protective and regenerative powers to it. Topaz was also part of biblical treasures, mentioned as one of the stones in Aaron’s breastplate.

The Greeks and Romans had similar beliefs: they used topaz as an amulet, believing it conferred strength and courage, while combating insomnia. The Romans also believed that topaz had the ability to change color in the presence of poison, thus signaling imminent danger.

In the Middle Ages, topaz was revered as a protective stone. It was believed to ward off evil spells and curses, and to bring physical and spiritual healing. Hildegarde of Bingen, an iconic figure of the time, used topaz in elixir form to treat vision disorders.

Purification and recharging

Cleansing:

Topaz can be purified by passing it quickly under water. To preserve the jewelry setting, it’s recommended to purify it by fumigation with a palo santo stick or with white sage. Burn the palo santo or sage and pass your jewelry over the smoke released. Don’t forget to ventilate the room well after fumigation.

Recharging:

Topaz can be recharged in sunlight, in a quartz geode, on a quartz cluster or an amethyst druse.
